How to Estimate Custom Label Quantities for a Product Launch
Wondering how many custom labels to order for a product launch? Begin with the number of packages you realistically plan to prepare, then work through the details that can change the total.
A larger order can look attractive on a per-label basis, but unused labels become waste when the design, container, or product range changes. The best starting quantity balances production needs with the uncertainty of a new launch.
Count packages and label positions separately
One finished product may use a front label, a back label, and a lid sticker. Calculate each position separately. If you plan to fill 600 jars, that does not automatically mean you need 600 total labels.
Then separate artwork versions. Different scents, sizes, flavors, or seasonal messages can create distinct print requirements. Record the planned quantity for each version instead of dividing a total evenly without checking the production mix.
Allow for setup without guessing blindly
Consider samples, photography units, staff training, application mistakes, and any equipment setup needs. Use experience from similar work if you have it. If not, ask the supplier and equipment operator what allowance makes sense for your process rather than applying an arbitrary percentage.
Also ask about reorder timing and whether the artwork is likely to change after launch. A smaller initial run may be sensible when the package design is still being validated. Once actual sales and waste are known, future quantities can be based on evidence.
Keep the production count, application losses, and remaining stock in a simple log. That record is more useful for the next order than the original sales forecast alone.
Request a custom label quote with quantities by artwork version, label position, and planned launch window. Ask for practical order options without assuming a particular minimum or turnaround time.
