RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) uses radio waves to identify and track objects. An RFID label contains a tiny microchip and antenna. When the label passes near an RFID reader, the reader sends out radio waves that power the chip, which then transmits its stored data back to the reader. Unlike barcodes, RFID doesn't require line-of-sight—you can read tags through boxes, at a distance, and hundreds at a time.
Barcodes require line-of-sight scanning (one at a time, close range). RFID can read hundreds of tags simultaneously, through packaging, at distances up to 30+ feet, without line-of-sight. RFID tags can also store more data and be rewritten. The tradeoff: RFID costs more per tag than printed barcodes.
There are three main types: LF (Low Frequency, 125-134 kHz) for access control and animal tracking; HF (High Frequency, 13.56 MHz) for payment cards and library books; and UHF (Ultra-High Frequency, 860-960 MHz) for supply chain, retail, and most commercial applications. Most custom labels use UHF RFID (also called RAIN RFID).
Read range depends on the tag, reader, and environment. Passive UHF tags typically read from 3-30+ feet with fixed readers, or 1-10 feet with handheld readers. Factors affecting range include tag size, inlay design, reader power, antenna configuration, and nearby materials (metal and liquids reduce range).
RFID labels can be made from paper (cost-effective, indoor use), polypropylene (moisture-resistant, durable), polyester (chemical and heat resistant), or specialty materials for extreme environments. The RFID inlay (chip + antenna) is embedded between the facestock and adhesive layers.

Standard RFID labels don't work well on metal—the metal interferes with the RF signal. For metal surfaces, we use on-metal labels with a spacer layer that allows the antenna to function properly. These cost more but perform reliably on metal.
The RFID chip itself can last 10+ years. Label lifespan depends on the material and environment. Paper labels may last months to a few years indoors. Polyester labels can last 5-10+ years in normal conditions. Harsh environments (heat, chemicals, outdoor) may reduce lifespan.
Minimum orders typically start at 10,000 labels for custom RFID labels. For standard sizes and formats, minimums may be lower. Contact us for specific quantities—we can often accommodate smaller orders for testing or pilots.

EPC (Electronic Product Code) is the standard data format stored on RFID tags. It's a unique identifier that links to detailed information in your database. Common formats include SGTIN (retail products), SSCC (logistics), and GIAI (assets).
Yes. We encode unique data on each tag—serial numbers, EPCs, or custom data formats. Provide your data in Excel/CSV format, or give us the rules for generating serial numbers, and we'll encode each tag accordingly.
For retail applications (especially major retailers), yes—a GS1 Company Prefix is required for valid SGTIN encoding. For internal asset tracking or closed-loop applications, you can use proprietary encoding without GS1.
Most RFID chips allow the EPC to be rewritten, but many applications lock the EPC after initial encoding to prevent tampering. User memory (additional data storage) can often be written and rewritten. We can configure tags as read-only or rewritable based on your needs.
Common causes: tags too close to metal or liquids, tags oriented wrong relative to reader antenna, interference from other RF sources, damaged tags, or reader configuration issues. On-metal tags, proper orientation, and reader tuning usually solve these problems.
Liquids absorb RF energy and reduce read range significantly. Tags on liquid containers should be placed where there's an air gap, or use specialized inlays designed for liquid environments. Read range will be shorter than with dry goods.
Modern UHF RFID readers can read hundreds of tags per second. In practice, the number depends on tag density, reader configuration, and environment. For inventory counting, you can typically scan a full pallet or shelf in seconds.
Reader choice depends on your application. Fixed readers mount at dock doors or conveyors for automated reading. Handheld readers are used for inventory counting and mobile applications. We focus on labels, but can recommend reader vendors for your application.
Major retailers with RFID mandates include Walmart, Target, Macy's, Nordstrom, Kohl's, JCPenney, and Dick's Sporting Goods. Requirements vary by product category. Check our Compliance Guide for details on each retailer's requirements.
Non-compliance can result in chargebacks (financial penalties), rejected shipments, delayed payments, or loss of the retail account. Major retailers enforce these requirements—compliance is not optional for suppliers.
RAIN RFID is the industry alliance and standard for UHF RFID (the type used in supply chain, retail, and most commercial applications). RAIN stands for RAdio frequency IdentificatioN. When you see "RAIN RFID," it means UHF RFID following industry standards.
Passive RFID labels are safe—they contain no battery and only transmit when energized by a reader. They don't interfere with pacemakers, phones, or other electronics. RFID readers are regulated to safe power levels.
