RFID Labels 101: What They Are and How They Work
What Is an RFID Label?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. An RFID label is a smart label that contains a tiny microchip and antenna embedded within the label substrate. Unlike a traditional barcode — which stores data in a printed pattern that must be scanned with a line-of-sight reader — an RFID label stores data electronically and communicates wirelessly with a reader using radio waves.
The result: faster, more accurate, and more flexible data capture across your entire supply chain.
How RFID Labels Work
Every RFID label contains three core components:
- Microchip (IC) — Stores the data associated with the item (product ID, serial number, batch number, etc.)
- Antenna — Transmits and receives radio frequency signals to and from the reader
- Substrate — The label material that holds the chip and antenna, and carries any printed information
When an RFID reader emits a radio frequency signal, any RFID label within range responds by transmitting its stored data back to the reader. This happens in milliseconds — and crucially, it can happen for dozens or hundreds of labels simultaneously, without requiring line-of-sight or individual scanning.
Types of RFID
Passive RFID
Passive RFID labels have no internal power source. They draw energy from the reader's radio frequency signal to power the chip and transmit data. Passive labels are the most common type used in retail, logistics, and supply chain applications. They're thin, flexible, cost-effective, and have an essentially unlimited lifespan.
Active RFID
Active RFID tags contain their own battery and can transmit signals over much longer distances (up to 100 meters or more). They're used for high-value asset tracking, vehicle tracking, and applications where real-time location data is needed. Active tags are significantly more expensive than passive labels.
Semi-Passive (Battery-Assisted Passive)
A hybrid approach — the battery powers the chip but the antenna still relies on the reader's signal. Used in specialized applications like temperature monitoring.
RFID Frequency Bands
RFID systems operate across several frequency bands, each with different characteristics:
- LF (Low Frequency, 125–134 kHz) — Short read range (up to ~10 cm). Used for animal tracking and access control.
- HF (High Frequency, 13.56 MHz) — Medium read range (up to ~1 meter). Used for library systems, smart cards, and NFC applications.
- UHF (Ultra High Frequency, 860–960 MHz) — Long read range (1–12 meters). The dominant frequency for retail, logistics, and supply chain RFID. This is what most people mean when they say "RFID labels."
